Democracy in action

On Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 members of Citizens for a Livable Cranbrook Society and the general public rallied in Spirit Square to deliver 3,024 elector response forms to City Hall in order to meet the 1,475 required signatures for the Alternative Approval Process.

CLCS members and a number of likewise concerned citizens came together during the month of August when most people are on vacation or otherwise engaged and not thinking about large land expansion.  City Council refused to hold a referendum and insisted on the AAP during August.  We accepted the challenge.  We went door to door, engaging our neighbours and getting 3,024 forms signed.  The results of the community-wide effort was that 3,057 forms were accepted (as being confirmed on the voter’s list); another 487 forms did not match an elector name on the voters list but had an address within the City; and 157 forms were rejected for various reasons.

Many believed it could not be done.  We did!

Despite the overwhelming response to the Alternative Approval Process, the City decided to proceed directly to referendum.  CLC had to initiate a media campaign.  Here are the radio ads:
